Sobre mí

Sergio Fuertes is a PhD candidate at the University Institute for Migration Studies of Comillas Pontifical University, where in October 2021 he began his research on local empowerment and leadership in the humanitarian-development-peace triple nexus regarding irregular migration responses. A graduate in Economic Law from the University of Deusto, he subsequently obtained a double Master's Degree in Law and Tax Consultancy at the IE University and furthered his studies with a University Specialization Degree in Internationalization awarded by the Public University of the Basque Country. He has worked as a legal advisor, corporate advisor, international trade advisor in Côte d'Ivoire, as well as a knowledge management trainee at the United Nations Secretariat, and he is currently the head of the mission for an international NGO in Mali.

In a more personal tone, I will mention that social sciences and economics have always been my passion. I studied law with a specialization in economics, which gave me many opportunities to develop my profession in the future. Later on, I specialized in law and in tax and accounting consulting for companies by doing a double master's degree and obtaining a law license to practice law. Nevertheless, I soon realized that the international development sector was my true vocation. Therefore, after my experience in PwC's offices, I made the most significant change in my professional life, I left the law career and specialized in the international development sector. I graduated with a diploma in internationalization, and I am currently completing a PhD in migration and international development.

To briefly explain my professional experience, I would like to emphasize that my technical work experience may be short, but my knowledge of the socio-cultural context of Mali and the socio-economic, political and security challenges of the Sahel region is broad and solid. For that reason, I am pursuing a PhD in Migration and International Development with a focus on the triple nexus and local ownership in the Central Sahel. In addition, my ability to interact with both local people and expatriates gives me access to accurate information.

On the positive side, I have worked in a multinational private sector company as a lawyer and tax advisor (PwC), in a government institution in Côte d'Ivoire as an advisor on international trade and political relations (economic and trade office of the Spanish embassy), within the United Nations system as an intern, which gave me access to a lot of information and direct experience of working within the UN (UN Secretariat, Department of Operational Support), and in an international NGO where I currently work since November 2021. In addition, in January 2021, I worked as a project manager and business advisor for a French branch in Côte d'Ivoire on a personally rewarding project to improve internet connectivity in African communications.

Furthermore, I am fluent in three UN working languages (English, French and Spanish), as well as Portuguese. I feel very comfortable in a multicultural, diverse, honest, respectful, committed and people-centered environment where I can develop my communication, analytical, writing and creative skills, along with motivating my colleagues by sharing a wide range of experiences and information.
